Too Many Facebook Marketplace Messages? How to Keep Up

A practical guide for busy sellers. By Julien Benaggoune, founder of PilotAgent. Last updated: October 2026

Short answer: get fewer messages by putting the answers in your listings, answer the rest faster with saved replies and set check-in times, and automate the first reply with Facebook's free Meta AI reply. When you still can't keep up, or buyers keep messaging while you sleep, an AI agent can hold the whole conversation for you and hand you the buyers who are ready to meet.

Signs you've outgrown answering by hand

    • You find messages a day later and the buyer has already bought elsewhere
    • You type the same five answers over and over
    • Your evenings and weekends go on "is this still available?"
    • You run several listings, or several Facebook accounts, and lose track of who asked what
    • Buyers ask for a time, you reply hours later, and they've gone quiet

If two or more of these sound familiar, work through the steps below in order. Each one takes pressure off the next.

    Step 1: Get fewer messages

Most Marketplace messages ask for something that could have been in the listing.

    • Put the price, condition and pickup area in the first lines of the description.
    • Say "price is firm" if it is. It cuts down the lowball messages.
    • Add when you're available for pickup or viewings for example "Pickup weekday evenings or Saturday morning".
    • Mark items as sold or pending straight away and delete old listings, so you stop getting messages about things that are gone.
    • Answer the questions you get most in the description: size, mileage, pets, delivery, whatever your buyers always ask.

Step 2: Answer faster by hand

    • See only Marketplace chats. On a computer, open facebook.com/messages and click "Marketplace" on the left, so buyer chats aren't mixed in with friends and family.
    • Save your common replies as phone shortcuts. On iPhone: Settings, General, Keyboard, Text Replacement. On Android (Gboard): Settings, Dictionary, Personal dictionary. Type "avl" and it expands to your full availability reply.
    • Check messages at set times, for example 8am, 1pm and 7pm, instead of all day. Buyers get a reply within hours and you get your day back.
    • Answer real questions first. A buyer asking for a time or a price is closer to buying than one who only tapped "Is this still available?".
    • End every reply with a question, usually a time. It sorts buyers from browsers.

Step 3: Automate the first reply (free)

Since March 2026 Facebook has its own Meta AI reply. Switch it on when you create a listing and it answers "Is this still available?" from your listing details. It handles the first message only, but on a busy listing that's a lot of messages you no longer touch. How to set up auto reply.

    Step 4: Automate the conversation

The first reply was never the hard part. The real time goes on what comes next: "will you take less?", "what's the mileage?", "can I come Saturday?", "where are you?". That's where an AI agent helps.

PilotAgent is an AI agent for Facebook Marketplace. It runs as a Chrome extension in your own Messenger and:

    • Answers every buyer at a human pace, from your listings and your rules
    • Negotiates within a floor price you set, and never goes below it
    • Suggests times from your hours and agrees a pickup or viewing in the chat
    • Collects name, phone and email, and files every lead in your dashboard
    • Replies in the buyer's language
    • Steps back the moment you type in a chat yourself

It replies while your computer is on, so many sellers leave an old laptop running in the evenings.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I manage lots of Facebook Marketplace messages?

Put the common answers in your listings, save your usual replies as phone shortcuts, check messages at set times, and switch on Facebook's free Meta AI reply for availability questions. If you still can't keep up, an AI agent like PilotAgent can answer the whole conversation for you.

Can I auto reply on Facebook Marketplace?

Yes. Facebook's Meta AI reply answers "Is this still available?" for free; switch it on when you create a listing. For follow-up questions, price and arranging a time, you need an AI agent such as PilotAgent.

How do I see only Marketplace messages?

On a computer, go to facebook.com/messages and click "Marketplace" on the left. Buyer chats then show without your personal conversations.

How do I stop missing buyers at night?

Put your pickup or viewing times in the listing so night-time buyers know when to expect you, and reply first thing in the morning with a time. An AI agent can answer them in the evening while your computer is on, so they get a reply while they're still interested.

Is it safe to use auto reply on Marketplace?

PilotAgent works in your own browser, never asks for your Facebook password, and only answers buyers who messaged you first, at a human pace. Read the full answer.
