Is It Safe to Use Auto Reply on Facebook Marketplace?

By Julien Benaggoune, founder of PilotAgent. Last updated: October 2026

Short answer: auto reply on Facebook Marketplace can be safe, but it depends on how the tool behaves. Meta's own AI reply is the lowest-risk option, though it only answers simple questions about a listing. With third-party tools, the risk comes from behaviour that looks like spam: logging in with your password from a server, sending messages at machine speed, or messaging people who never contacted you. PilotAgent was built to avoid all of that. No tool can promise that Meta will never restrict an account, so below is exactly how PilotAgent works and what you can do to keep your account safe.

What actually gets Marketplace accounts restricted

Facebook restricts accounts for behaviour, not for having help with replies. The common triggers are:

    • Messaging people who did not message you first, especially with the same text again and again.
    • Bursts of messages at machine speed, dozens in a few minutes, around the clock.
    • Logins from unusual places, such as a tool that signs in to your account from a server in another country, or a shared password.
    • Listing problems, prohibited items, misleading listings, or the same item posted over and over.
    • Scam-like behaviour, asking for deposits before a viewing, sending suspicious links.

    How PilotAgent works

PilotAgent is a Chrome extension. It works inside your own browser, on your own computer, in the Facebook account you are already logged in to.

It never asks for your Facebook password

There is no server logging in to your account and no login from a strange location.

It only answers buyers who messaged you first

About a Marketplace listing. It never starts conversations and never sends bulk messages.

It leaves your personal chats alone

Friends, family and group chats are skipped.

It replies at a human pace

You choose the speed. There are short breaks of 20 to 90 seconds between chats, and never more than 30 replies in any hour. If more buyers are waiting, it waits too and answers them as soon as the hour allows. There is an optional slower pace at night.

Every reply is written for that buyer

From your listing and your own rules. There are no copy-paste blasts.

    You stay in control

Pause any single chat, switch replies off from your dashboard, or turn the extension off on your computer. If you start typing in a chat yourself, PilotAgent steps back.

Meta's built-in AI reply vs PilotAgent

Risk to your accountLowest, it is Facebook's own featureLow when used as designed (see above)
What it answersSimple questions about the listing, such as availabilityThe whole conversation: questions, price, viewings or test drives
    Negotiation within your rules
Saves names, phone numbers and emailsYes, in your dashboard
Several Facebook accountsYes, from one dashboard

Many sellers use both: Meta's reply for the quick "is it still available?", and PilotAgent for buyers who want to talk price or come and see the item.

How to keep your account safe, with any tool

    1. 1

Use a reply pace that looks human. Instant replies are fine for the first message, but avoid replying to dozens of buyers within a minute.

    2. 2

Keep your listings genuine: real photos, honest descriptions, no duplicate posts.

    3. 3

Never let a tool message people who did not contact you.

    4. 4

Never share your Facebook password with a tool or a service.

    5. 5

Avoid running automation on a brand-new Facebook account. Use it normally for a while first.

    6. 6

Do not ask for deposits or payments before a viewing, and do not send links buyers did not ask for.

    7. 7

Read the conversations now and then, and step in when a buyer needs you.

    Frequently asked questions

Will Facebook ban my account for using PilotAgent?

We cannot promise what Meta will do with any account, and no honest tool can. PilotAgent is designed to behave like a person answering their own messages: in your own browser, at a human pace, only to buyers who wrote to you. Following the tips above keeps the risk low.

Does PilotAgent need my Facebook password?

No. It works in the browser where you are already logged in to Facebook. We never ask for, see or store your Facebook password.

Does PilotAgent read my personal messages?

It only opens buyer chats about Marketplace listings. Chats with friends, family and groups are left alone.

    What data does PilotAgent keep?

The buyer conversations it answers, so it can write replies and show you your chats and leads in your dashboard. Your data is never sold. The extension's regular check-in only sends counts, never names or message text. See our privacy policy.

Is using auto reply against Facebook's terms?

Facebook's terms limit automated activity on the platform. PilotAgent does not scrape listings, does not contact anyone who has not messaged you, and only acts in your own account, at your direction and at a human pace. It is your account, so read Facebook's terms and decide what you are comfortable with.

Can I stop it at any time?

Yes. Pause one chat, switch "Reply to buyers" off in your dashboard, or turn the extension off. It stops straight away.
