How to Respond to Facebook Marketplace Car Leads Faster
A guide for car dealers, with reply scripts. By Julien Benaggoune, founder of PilotAgent. Last updated: October 2026
Short answer: answer every Marketplace car lead within minutes, evenings and weekends included, and end every reply with one clear next step: a test-drive time or a phone number. Most buyers message several sellers about similar cars, and the first useful answer usually gets the visit. Use the scripts below for the questions buyers ask most, and an AI agent for the hours your team is not at the desk.
When car buyers message, and what they ask
We looked at recent Facebook Marketplace conversations about cars for sale handled by PilotAgent (last 90 days, anonymous counts only, times in each seller's own time zone).
61%
of first messages arrive outside weekday 9 to 5
44%
open with "Is this still available?" and nothing else
43%
ask to see the car or take a test drive
Over the whole conversation, 41% talked about price, 34% asked about condition, mileage or history, 8% about a trade-in and 6% about financing. 36% of first messages came at the weekend.
So the lead that matters most often arrives on a Saturday or after closing, opens with a one-line question, and turns into "can I see it?" within a few messages. A dealer who only answers in office hours misses most of them.
Reply scripts for the 7 questions buyers ask most
Every script answers the question first, then moves the buyer one step closer to the lot. Only promise what your dealership really offers.
1. "Is this still available?"
Never answer with just "yes". A time question gets far more replies than a statement.
2. "What's your lowest price?"
If you do have room, give one number with a reason to act: "I can do $23,900 if you can come in this week."
3. "Any issues? How many miles?"
Be exact and honest. A vague answer here loses more buyers than a high price.
4. "Do you take trade-ins?"
5. "Do you do financing?"
6. "Where are you? Can I see it today?"
7. "Is that the out-the-door price?"
If the buyer goes quiet
Send one message the next day, then leave it:
A simple Marketplace lead process for a dealership
- 1
One person owns the Marketplace inbox, on every shift, so no lead waits for "someone".
- 2
Reply within 5 minutes, during opening hours. Set a phone notification for every new Marketplace chat.
- 3
End every reply with one next step, a test-drive time, a phone number, or a trade-in question.
- 4
Get a name and phone number before the visit, so a no-show can be called.
- 5
Write every lead down, the same day: name, number, car, what they asked.
- 6
Cover the evenings and weekends. That is where most first messages land.
Where an AI agent fits
Facebook's own Meta AI reply can answer "Is this still available?" for free, and it is worth switching on. It stops there.
PilotAgent is an AI agent for the rest of the conversation. It runs as a Chrome extension in your own Messenger and:
- Answers every buyer message at a human pace, from your listings and your rules
- Negotiates within a floor price you set per vehicle, and never goes below it
- Asks for name, phone and email, and files every lead in a built-in CRM
- Suggests test-drive times from your hours and agrees one in the chat
- Replies in the buyer's language
- Runs several Facebook accounts, one per salesperson, from one dashboard (2 on Professional, 5 on Enterprise)
- On Enterprise, sends each lead to your CRM through Zapier or Make
You stay in control: pause any chat and take it over, or switch replies off from your dashboard.
Frequently asked questions
How fast should a car dealer respond to Facebook Marketplace leads?
Within minutes. Buyers usually message several sellers about similar cars, and the first useful answer tends to get the visit. In our data most first messages arrive outside office hours, so evenings and weekends matter as much as the working day.
What do Facebook Marketplace car buyers ask most?
The first message is usually "Is this still available?" (44% of chats in our data). Later in the conversation buyers ask to see the car or book a test drive (43%), about price (41%) and about condition, mileage or history (34%).
Can an AI answer car buyers on Marketplace?
Yes. An AI agent like PilotAgent answers from your vehicle listings and your rules, negotiates within the floor price you set, and asks for contact details. If a buyer asks something it cannot answer from your information, it says you will check, rather than guessing.
Does it work with my dealership CRM?
On Enterprise and Enterprise+, PilotAgent sends each new lead to your systems by webhook, for example through Zapier or Make into most CRMs. On every plan you can export leads as a CSV file.
Can several salespeople use it?
Yes. Each Facebook account gets its own agent, settings and leads, all in one dashboard: 2 agents on Professional, 5 on Enterprise, and more on Enterprise+.
Is it safe for my Facebook account?
PilotAgent works in your own browser, never asks for your Facebook password, and only answers buyers who messaged you first, at a human pace. Read the full answer on account safety.
